Behavioral responses of bioluminescent fireflies to artificial light at night

چکیده

Bioluminescent insects have been the subject of scientific interest and popular wonder for millennia. But in 21st century, fireflies, click beetles, cave glow-worms that brighten our nights are threatened by an unprecedented competitor: anthropogenic light pollution. Artificial lights can obscure light-based signals on which these other bioluminescent organisms rely to court mates, deter predators, attract prey. In following review we summarize a recent influx research into behavioral consequences artificial at night firefly beetles (Coleoptera: Lampyridae), organize four distinct courtship signaling systems. We conclude highlighting several opportunities further advance this emerging field offering set up-to-date lighting recommendations help land managers stakeholders balance public safety ecological sustainability.

Artificial light at night advances avian reproductive physiology.

Artificial light at night is a rapidly increasing phenomenon and it is presumed to have global implications. Light at night has been associated with health problems in humans as a consequence of altered biological rhythms. Effects on wild animals have been less investigated, but light at night has often been assumed to affect seasonal cycles of urban dwellers. Using light loggers attached to fr...

Artificial Light at Night and Cancer: Global Study

Background: Artificial light at night (ALAN) has been linked to increased risk of cancers in body sites like the breast and colorectum. However exposure of ALAN as an environmental risk factor and its relation to cancers in humans has never been studied in detail. Objective: To explore the association of ALAN with all forms of cancers in 158 countries. Materials and Methods: An ecological study...

Exposure of tropical ecosystems to artificial light at night: Brazil as a case study

Artificial nighttime lighting from streetlights and other sources has a broad range of biological effects. Understanding the spatial and temporal levels and patterns of this lighting is a key step in determining the severity of adverse effects on different ecosystems, vegetation, and habitat types. Few such analyses have been conducted, particularly for regions with high biodiversity, including...

Mice exposed to dim light at night exaggerate inflammatory responses to lipopolysaccharide.

The mammalian circadian system regulates many physiological functions including inflammatory responses. Appropriately timed light information is essential for maintaining circadian organization. Over the past ∼120 years, urbanization and the widespread adoption of electric lights have dramatically altered lighting environments. Exposure to light at night (LAN) is pervasive in modern society and...

Exposure to dim light at night during early development increases adult anxiety-like responses.

Early experiences produce effects that may persist throughout life. Therefore, to understand adult phenotype, it is important to investigate the role of early environmental stimuli in adult behavior and health. Artificial light at night (LAN) is an increasingly common phenomenon throughout the world. However, animals, including humans, evolved under dark night conditions. Many studies have reve...
